PRODUCTS & SERVICES
Intersection safety is a significant part of highway safety; over 45% of all reported crashes occur at intersections and nearly one-fourth of all fatal crashes happen at intersections. Intersection safety is a significant issue for both urban and rural areas.
The Safety & Design Technical Service Team (TST) assists highway and transportation professionals with proven intersection safety measures and technology to reduce intersection crashes. The team works in partnership with customers to identify key safety-related intersection geometric design decisions and potential safety improvements. Team members have assisted transportation agencies with the review of preliminary roundabout design proposals and by providing technical assistance to seek solutions to challenging roundabout planning and design issues. The Safety and Design team’s assistance can result in improvements to safety and operation of both signalized and un-signalized intersections.
Transportation professionals seeking training in or assistance with intersection safety issues may contact the Resource Center Safety & Design TST.
Workshops, Seminars and Courses
Intersection Safety Workshop (NHI 380077)
Intersection crashes can be significantly reduced by the application of proven intersection measures for rural and suburban/urban intersections. The workshop presents examples of intersection safety countermeasures for design, operations, and safety improvements. Examples are presented along with their specific safety benefits in the form of crash reduction factors.
Three-day Intersection Safety Workshop: Designing and Operating Intersections for Safety (NHI 380074)
This course presents intersection design and operations concepts with the objective of improving intersection safety for all users. The course details various intersection safety processes, strategies and countermeasures with emphasis on the application of best practices for enhanced safety.
Signalized Intersection Guidebook Workshop (NHI 380078)
The Signalized Intersection Guidebook is a single, comprehensive document with methods for evaluating the safety and operations of signalized intersections and tools to remedy deficiencies. The treatments in this guide range from low-cost measures such as improvements to signal timing and signage, to high-cost measures such as intersection reconstruction or grade separation.
Roundabout Workshop - Planning and Designing Safer Intersections
Roundabouts are a proven safety solution for reducing the frequency and severity of intersection crashes. This workshop presents an introduction to planning and designing roundabout intersections for safety. The workshop is highly interactive with numerous discussions, examples, case studies and exercises.
